My ability to play is ranked right up there with the worst players in the world, but I have finally gotten to the point of needing more than the simplest of diatonic scales. In my attempts to play accidentals, I have found that half-holing is not dependable for me.

As a result, I have tended toward cross fingering to pull notes down a half step. While this seems more accurate, it is less intuitive. Playing a half step down by half covering a hole seems to make sense, while covering two holes below doesn't, unless you think about it...It also slows my playing considerably, but that may improve with practice.

I was wondering if other people have a preference, and why you prefer your method.

I prefer to "slide" into a half-hole position. Sliding your fingers up or down while still in contact with the instrument is quick and fairly accurate. This technique is almost mandatory for Tabor Pipe players, unles thay like gripping the instrument in their teeth(?)

The only accidentals I find myself needing are the Cnat, G# and Fnat. The C natural I usually end up using the 0XX000 or (occasionally 0X0XXX) cross-fingering - sometimes I'll slide up into half-holing it for the musical effect, but 99% of the time I cross-finger. On the G & F, for me anyway, it's heaps easier to half-hole them.

My best solution is avoiding tunes with accidentals. drunken

That's my plan!

But my lovely wife likes me to play greensleeves and the way I play it requires this one cross fingering xxoxxo
Plus there's a couple more here and there, enough to make me figure out the basic idea and so now I can pretty much do them when I need to..

Half holing only appeals to me when I am sliding off the lower note, onto the higher one. I usually prefer a crisper separation of notes. But if I use tonguing to cut the note, then I may or may not get the accurate note. Without the feedback of sliding, I don't feel confident.
