PostSubject: Cherry wood   Cherry wood Icon_minitimeSat May 24, 2008 8:51 am

I have a couple of lengths of wood set aside from a cherry tree my father-in-law cut down. I also have some new lengths of Wild Black Cherry. My intention was to use these for walking sticks, but I was thinking it would be nice to drill some simple flutes into them so that they would be "Walking Stick Flutes".

However, I had heard that Wild Cherry especially, and all Cherry to some extent, has cyanide in it. I doubt that there is enough to be absorbed by the lips on cured wood, but would like some confirmation on that.

Anyone know anything about using cherry wood for flutes?

Why not use a non-toxic wood as a lip plate. This would isolate the player from the cherry wood oil. Just epoxy the plate over the embouchure area and then drill the voicing. It is easier if you make the bore in 2 halves with a Router and epoxy them together. The seam is invisible and will last a lifetime. The embouchure and toneholes can be drilled from the inside of the bore to easilly facilitate conical toneholes and embouchure. It also eliminates the problems of deep bore drilling, like bit-wander. Yes?

Is it true then that Cherry wood is Toxic?

I looked it up a while ago and found conflicting information. Some people use it for food preparation tables and utensils, other people talk about cherry leaves killing cows.

These are specially cut and dried branches of knarley old cherries, which I hope to draw-knife down to much lighter-weight walking sticks. My plan for the "Flute" is to hide a plug cut in the headpiece, then use that as the origin of the hollow tube.

I intend to use a slanting vent hole to terminate the resonator at it's fundamental length. I read about a guy who does this, and I am sure I will mess it up quite a bit before I get it right.

Talk about end effects!

I still haven't decided if I will use a fipple in the plug cut, a top emboucher like my little pipes, or a standard cross blown flute emboucher which could then have the lip plate you mentioned. I've been drying some maple staves to use as experiments, but they still have quite a while to dry. My Cherry is only one year seasoned, so I have time to make up my mind.

I don't think Cherry is "toxic", but many people are allergic to tree and plant resins from similar wood. The resin in Cedar,Redwood and some exotic fruitwoods can irritate skin too. Waxing and clearcoats can alleviate this though.

There is a "Jig" used by carpenters to drill steep angles for screw holes in flooring and furniture. I will try and find and post a photo I saw at "Recorder Homepage" showing a wooden box jig used for the bottom holes in Recorder making. I would use my Bridgeport Mill to cut these but most people don't have access to machine tools. In the mean time, here is a fun You-tube video on Recorder making and one on Flute Making that should be fun. They uses machine tools, but some of the work is done by hand. I hope they give insight??? If you like these, maybe you could add them to the "Links" section?
