Hi Guys. I am just getting started making these but am having a blast. I think I have made about 20 so far.

I started out making a G flute out of CPVC but don't really play that much. I MUCH prefer the D flute made with PVC.

I noticed you guys talking about making the holes at a set spot and then slowly enlarging them to tune them. Doesn't this take forEVER?? I've just been using the Flutomatic to figure out sizing and then test out a few modifications, embouchure and finger hole cuts, etc.

Pretty well have the D flute bang on now and going to be trying to sell some. I am keeping them very simple, meant to be a starter flute. I will probably sell them at about $20-30 each, mainly because it's a fun hobby. :p

One thing I did for making the smaller G flute though is to make a rig. It is made from a price of CPVC split down with just small starter holes in it. I just line it up to the end of my blank and run the drill through the hole to drill the blank under it. It means I can pre-drill my blank in about 2 mins without having to measure it at all. I then progressively drill each hole larger till it is the desired size. I found that drill large hole right away would "grab" the flute and make the hole less than pretty. Enlarging holes keeps that from happening.

I might try something like this for the D flute but I like to put more time into them and make them a little nicer.

Nice to find this forum, especially with a subforum specifically for PVC. Wink

Hi Darren,

Yes, for straight D pipes I have it pretty much set. But my ceramic pipes sometimes are not the same length after the first firing, and often I don't use a diatonic scale. In PVC, I just mark them and drill. Like you said, take a couple of minutes. But even then, a little bit of careful undercutting wth a file, tuning them with an electronic tuner or keyboard, and a final polishing of the holes and surfaces - can improve even a good flute.

And of course, since I don't have a drill press or even that kind of work bench, a lot of things that are easier with jigs and such are not for me. Yet.

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it and we would love to see your setup.

Hello, Darren! I mean no disrespect in this but what's the hurry? Take your time, man! Very Happy

Heh, this is just for the small G flute. I take a lot more time on the D which is the one I like to play. Wink

Actually, I find that I am filing on and off for about 3 days before I am happy with a flute. Certainly am not going to make a living selling them for $30 if it takes me that long for each one. Wink

Thanks for the tip Darren! I like the idea of using a rig for measuring. Not only faster, but consistant results. "Measure twice, cut three" seems to be what I usually do.

I don't use any power tools at all and so I don't like starting over because I measured something wrong. I even use a hand crank drill and hold the pipe between my knees!

Thanks again!

Ya, I was worried more about accuracy than speed, but it does make it a LOT faster as well.
