Well, I've spent the last week learning how to make bamboo flutes. I've taken to wrapping and drilling, because I don't like the smell of burned bamboo. The sound is much nicer than PVC, but only a little smoother, and part of that is the flat part of the culm I am using for the sound blade.

I've had most of my bamboo split upon further drying. I guess I'm going to need higher quality bamboo, along with oven drying, and permament thread wrappings.

If you have the option, buy a couple of barbeque tourches (we have them in the uk, they're just a 1" bamboo pole about 4-5' long with the top split to hold an oil lamp. The retail at about 5 and are already well dried. You need to hunt through the stock to find a good one but it's worth it for the price.

Yeah, I've been looking at those. Pity is that I lived in Florida for 45 years and had to cut down bamboo like a weed most of that time... now I want it and have a hard time finding it!

Since my last post I've mostly thread wrapped my bamboo pipes at both ends and between the finger holes. An unsatisfactory solution, but it holds them together for a while.
