My name is Bill, and I also post here as "Admin". I am interested in the most simple of flutes, hollow tubes what you blow across to get a tune. 8-) I have made many, some are even in tune.

I live in Vermont, having moved here from Florida (long story), with my lovely wife and our 12 year old child. We all play music at varying degrees of skill.

I also play Piano, guitar and harmonica, all self taught. With the Flute, however, I am starting to finally learn music. Much of that is because I finally have the time and inclination to do so.

I make ceramic side blown flutes and Xuns (a kind of vessel flute from China) and am just starting to make penny whistles and flutes in wood and PVC... maybe soon in metal.

Welcome to everyone else and I hope this forum fills a need in the community.

Very Happy My name is Dennis and I live in Independence, Oregon. I've played guitar for many years and now play mountain dulcimer, simple system flute and penny whistle. I've made PVC whistles and flutes for the last few months and find it fun and relaxing. I'm retired now and a widower.

I think this forum is a great idea! I love simple, acoustic instruments and look forward to reading comments from other flute players and makers. Thanks for starting this site, Bill. cheers

My name is Thomas. I live between my ears most of the time, but the rest of the time it's Minneapolis MN. I have been an Amateur Woodwind Designer/Maker for the last 15 years. It started when I found out that a simple 6 holed Irish flute cost $2 or $3 thousand!!! I put my research skills to work and added the info to my years of machine shop experience. My first flute was a C natural keynote made from a Menards Bamboo Tiki Torch Laughing It was made entirely with an Exacto-knife, a rat tail file and some sand paper. I still play it in Sessions. The design came from the Booklet "Secrets of the Flute" by Lew Paxton Price. The measurements now reside in the MIMForum archives. http://www.mimf.com/

Greetings. My name is Carl and live in Montana. I am certainly not a professional flute or whistle player. In fact, I doubt I would even qualify as an amateur. I do have a fascination with the natural sound of flutes, Didgeridoos, and wind harps. I have built some flutes out of plastic with varying success. Tried a tin whistle out of copper that was a time consuming "learning process" but fun at the same time. Look forward to learing what others have to offer.

Hi Guys & Gals,

I'm Larry and am from Cincinnati, Ohio. I play whistle & flute and take classes at Cincinnati's Riley School of Irish Music. I don't know anything about making either flutes or whistles or much of anything else for that matter - well, I suppose I'm pretty good at making messes but that's about it. Razz

I'm hope the forum takes off, and I'm looking forward to the discussions.

Hi,

My name is Scott and I live in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. My wife and I work as teachers at a Christian school here. We have two daughters, aged 10 and almost 9, who are students at the school.

I have been teaching myself music for about two years now. I started with the whistle and moved to the flute. I'm spending most of my play time with either a Copley & Boegli flute or an M&E R&R. Whistle-wise I mostly play a SYN Bb.

Mind you, I don't play any of these instruments terribly well at this point, but I practice a bit everyday!

Hello everyone!

I'm very pleased to have you all here. I hope we can encourage each other in our enjoyment of the simple flute, it's making and playing, as well as form a fun community across the various locations we represent so far.

Hello to everyone here!

My name is Dennis, aka Feadoggie. I live in eastern Pennsylvania in the USA. I have been an enthusiast and player of folk music for the last five decades, yeah, I'm not a youngster. My first attempts at flute making were back in the seventies using a hacksaw, an exacto knife and a couple files. The results were poor to say the least. For the last ten years or so I have applied myself more seriously to the task and the results a pretty usable. I make whistles in most keys out of PVC/CPVC, delrin/acetal, aluminum and some brass. I make flutes from PVC mostly and I have tried bamboo. I've got the whistle/flute making disease pretty bad. I've purchased three lathes in five years, each one about twice the capacity of the previous one. But time spent making the little tooters is good therapy. And there is a lot of joy when the first notes pop out of the finished instrument. My current focus is on sorting out the bugs in a gundrilling rig for boring wooden blanks.

Hi all
My name is Ron - I'm 56 and I live in France and California. Been making simple flutes for about 9 months. Although I have made a couple of Shakuhachi from bamboo, a Xiao from bamboo, and some experiments in PVC, my interest is in the Anasazi / Hopi flutes. I have made a branch Hopi, a PVC Anasazi and a split bore Anasazi. Currently waiting for some line bored cedar blanks to make a few with actual cylindrical bores. I use mostly hand tools, gouges, etc.

Looking forward to learning!

Ron

Are the Amerind clay flutes something like this? (sorry, small picture)

http://www.carousel-music.com/images/tripleflute1.gif

I have a great interest in these multi-bore instruments with tone holes. I have made a few in wood (extension of my wooden Pan Flute crafting). The bores can be closed or open and the tone is similar to Native American Folk Flutes. Adjusting the size of the bore end hole facillitates tuning.

Hi all,

My name is Charlotte and I love to make "stuff". I made a Native American style flute out of river cane just to see if I could do it after watching my brother try and fail. It sounds pretty bad and I got a horrible rash on my mouth from the cane but at least I got it to make some noise. I've been told it wasn't really river cane, but I got it from the banks of the Cimmeron river near my parents farm, so I figured it was close enough.

I moved on to CPVC and found that much easier to work with. I tried to tune it using an electric keyboard and my tone deaf ears. Better than the river cane, but still not really playable when anyone else is in the house.

I finally just bought a couple of Waltons for my grandson and me to play around with and I am hooked. I still want to make some whistles myself and won't be satisfied until I get one that sounds decent.

I love music but haven't had much luck learning an instrument till I discovered the Irish Whistle. (5 years of piano lessons and I can pick out a melody with my right hand, 3 years of guitar and I can play 5 or 6 chords) I started on the whistle about a month ago and I can play 34 hymns and most of the songs in the book I got with my whistle. It's been great for my ego. I will never be a "performer" but it makes me happy to be able to play a song and have someone else recognize it!

Thanks for setting this forum up! I cant wait to see where it all leads!

Hi Charlotte! Good to have you. I found the simple whistle about the same, after struggling with other instruments for years, I pick up a six holed flute and can play to my satisfaction less than a year later.

We hope to have a plans section where you can see what others are making, I should set that up now, but I have an 8:00 date with my son... er... right now.
