| Hi I read on the forum help site that folk were having problems registering and logging on. So I did and it works fine. Just thought I would test it for you, I am sorry to say I know nothing about flutes, other than they make a most beuatiful sound. Good luck with the forum Please feel free to delete my membership and this post if you wish | |

| Hello, My name is Thomas and I'm a Fluto-halic... I've been an Amateur Woodwind Luthier for 15 years now and would be glad to learn from any "Pro's" here as well as share my knowlage of Acoustics. I guess I don't know my "catagory" yet , but I still feel I'm an Amateur. I only sell my simple system woodwinds Part time at flea markets. If any members feel intimidated with posting questions, you can send an E-mail to... thomashastay@yahoo.com I'm currently writing a book of standard woodwind designs with full measurements. The list is up to 175 designs to date, most of them modernized Renaissance and Baroque instruments with optional historic keynote scales. I have mountains of "hard to find" research to share and I would be happy to get tips on new sources. T.H. | |

| Hello, my name is Dennis and I'm very happy to be a member of this forum. "Simple Flutes" is a great title and a goal I've been pursuing for the last eight months. I've drilled a LOT of holes in PVC tubing and have managed to make a couple of fun, simple and in-tune flutes. Let's have fun and share ideas! Thanks. | |

| Hi Dennis,
Great photo, are those your dogs?
I also have a pile of PVC flutes cluttering up my work area. Some work better than others, but most of them have given me some fun. I'm playing around right now with a way to make a full PVC fipple for a tabor like one handed flute. I've made them with wood, but I want a better, more hygenic way. I'd really like a way that can be made with brass fittings, so I could screw it on the end of supply tubing. I have a plan, if only my dremel tool would cooperate.

| Hi Bill,
Thanks...Buddy is on the left, he's eleven and Winnie is on the right and she's eight...both are hundred-pounders! I've had them both since they were eight weeks
I know that CPVC has brass male pipe thread to female slip connectors. But, you know it's dimensionally different from regular PVC...and those pipe threads are heavy. Plastic or delrin fipples sure taste better than metal or wet wood, for sure. If you wanted a screw-on mouthpiece, could you use a big die to cut the male threads and corresponding tap for the female part? I don't know if it's possible with thin walls. You and Mr. Dremel will figure it out!

| Hello Oregonden
Have you considered the stabilized wood blanks used for pen making? these are sealed/waterproof and can be cleaned with disinfectant. They come in a rainbow of colors and also in acrylic (fake) bone, turtle shell, ivory etc. I have made sets of small parlor bagpipes from these.
There are many cheap mini-lathes out there if you want to "move up" to more complex construction. A Table Router can also be used to make flutes in 2 halves without expensive long auger bits. I use mine to make walking stick flutes with the natural bark still intact. It's a snap to make "block" panflutes this way too. These all sell well at Ren-Fairs and Rendezvous.
A simple lahte can be made of odds and ends. A bow-and-bobbin Lathe is one type. These are very easy to build. Here is a photo of one type (google for more!). They can be used on PVC tube and soft brass as well. http://www.greenwoodworker.co.uk/images/Bow_Bobbin_Amberley.jpg
PVC mismatches with brass/bronze couplings? Use thread wrappings coated with clear PVC glue.

| I've become very excited about pole lathes. I know that by the time I get set up, I could have bought a nice motorized lathe, but there's something about manual power that appeals to me. | |

| I hope this isn't "over the line", I certainly don't mean to tick anyone off in my second post.
I'd like to suggest that political, religious or controversial topics, signatures, avatars and the like be kept off the boards here - particularly since there are other venues for that sort of thing.

| I would agree until you get to signatures and avatars, because I don't want to be the Politically Correct Police. Flaming conversation will be stopped, but if someone here can't tolerate a signature or a image that is not otherwise obscene, profane, or vulgar, then that might have to be their problem. My "Admin" image has my cat on my shoulder, some people call pet ownership slavery.... | |

I doubt that the cat sees the rolls in that manner

| Some friends of mine tried to harness the energy of cats, with mixed results. It's towards the end of this video

| I'm still looking for suggestions on the organization of this board.
I don't know whether the geographical division is the best, even though it makes more sense to me, because there are flutes that cross geographical lines.
Function and technology might make sense, except that people who only know that they heard a nice flute in Greece won't know what group to look in.
There's also the chronolgical division that might be a compromise, ancient flutes, traditional flutes and modern flutes. Maybe subdivide that by geography.
Maybe I think about stuff too much.
